Batman vs. Superman
Jul. 21st, 2008 02:30 amAs I've mentioned before, I've always rather despised Superman. I've always liked Batman, because while there are obviously a lot of unbelievable things in the canon, Bruce Wayne has to work for his accomplishments as a superhero. He's a man who pushes himself to do extraordinary things, not an omnipotent alien who has everything as a hero handed to him on a silver platter. This page has an excellent synopsis of why Superman sucks and throws in a few mentions of why Batman is so much better and cooler.

However, Batman in the comics irritates me a bit right now. Current movie Batman is fine, Diniverse Batman is fine, but I just don't like the current comics Batman. I'm kind of mad at comics in general right now, though.

Date: 2008-07-21 04:10 pm (UTC)It's no accident that Supes wears bright primary colors, while Batman was drawn in, literally, shades of gray. Considering my lifelong love affair with virtually every antihero I've ever read in literature, Batman has it all over the general rest of the superhero contingent. And I tend to think that if he didn't exist, then an entire genre of later comic heroes--a la Spawn--wouldn't either.
"The dude's a foreigner who took it upon himself to act as mankind's savior when, generally, mankind shouldn't need him." Whammo. Bruce Wayne is a Gotham native, and it's Gotham that forged him. How appropriate, then, for him to assume that he has some responsibility to solve Gotham's problems. Superman, on the other hand, is apart from Earth, and particularly from Metropolis, which he only moved to as an adult, but still assumes that he understands the issues enough to jump into any situation with his tights and cape and immediately pick out the villain.
