Dark is Rising

Just a reminder to everyone: this Friday, The Dark is Rising is being released in theaters. The trailers have made it clear that it's a travesty. So, instead, Eric has declared October 5th, the release date, to be Stay Home and Read the Book Day.

Mark it on your calenders and get to your local bookstore or library if you don't have the book on your shelves already!

I should really buy it. I realised just recently that I don't own the full series. (Oddly enough I have Over Sea, Under Stone and Greenwitch.)

I need to get the full series. All I have is The Dark is Rising.

Although it's quite clear that the movie is going to be nothing like the book, I do have to wonder... will it be watchable on its own? If I don't think of it in terms of the subtleties of the novels (which really are the kinds of things which do not transfer well to the screen) might it still be a good movie?

I don't know. It tempts me to go see it just to find out.

I have my doubts. Very few butchered books end up watchable, in my experience.
