firebyrd: (Custom)

I've been laaaaazy and haven't been posting my customs as I finished them. I'm fixing that tonight!

In September, the My Little Pony Trading Post had a custom contest. The rules were to go to a random pony name generator and make a custom from the name you go. I was given the name Blue Bee and this little breezie immediately leapt into being in my head.

Blue Bee was made from a breezie and rehaired with stripes of After Midnight and Bobby Blue nylon Dollyhair. Her antennae were painted blue as were her eyes. Her fabric wings were replaced by irridescent insect wings made of Fantasy Film. Finally, she was given a cute bee in shades of blue, completing her theme of blue, blue, and more blue.

The fall of 2007 was the season of custom swaps for me. There were so many fun ones that I couldn't resist joining. One of these was the breeding swap, where people chose two ponies they wanted to have an offspring, and their partner imagined and created what the two ponies' genes would combine as. My partner picked Moonstone and Star Hopper as her two ponies and so Moonhopper was born.

Moonhopper was made from a Baby Glory. She was repainted in a vibrant blue-green color inspired by Star Hopper's body. Her eyes were painted in magenta, a color inherited from her father, Moonstone. She was given hair in Watermelon, Golden Delicous, Lucky Clover, and Bobby Blue from Dollyhair, the colors reminiscent of both Moonstone and the store version of Star Hopper. Finally, her symbol was a combination of both parents', the UFO from Star Hopper surrounded by the glittery stars of Moonstone.

There is much more to the Harry Potter universe that shows up in the seven books. Some of this extra material shows up in Fantastic Creatures and Where to Find Them, written by J.K. Rowling for charity. This describes many of the monsters in Harry Potter's world, both those described in the main series as well as others. One of the others is the Augery, also known as the Irish Phoenix. It's a sad, vulture-ish looking green-black bird whose call was long thought to signify the death of the listener. Later wizards finally realized that it just foretold a rainstorm.

I joined the Arena's Harry Potter swap in the fall of 2007. My partner listed the Augery as one of her favorites, and as I had thought that was a good idea for a custom while flipping through the book, I decided to go for it. Augery was made from a very baity Flowerburst. He was given a full-body repaint in very dark green, then I sculpted on his beak and eyes. I drybrushed black onto his head, neck, and lower legs, then gave them all a wash of the same dark green that was his color base. Finally, he was rolled in green feathers and given a stiff, feathery tail.

Hilariously, my partner also made me an augery pony.

One of the sweetest people in the world is a well known member of the pony community, KarRedRoses. Her favorite pony is G1 Red Roses, and after all the nice things she's done for me, I wanted to do something for her in return. I decided to make her a Ponyville chibi Red Roses.

Red Roses was made from a chibi, obviously, though I cannot remember which. Her hair was already pink, but it was too dark, so I painted over it. I then painted her eyes the same pink and added her symbol of a spraying perfume bottle. Finally, I sculpted her a small horn, as no unicorn chibis had been released when I started, attached it, and painted it as close a match to her body color as I could get. She ended up making it to KarRedRoses right around Christmas, which made me even happier about the whole thing.

Hasbro started coming out with Ponyville ponies in 2006, very small ponies completely molded in plastic. Also known as chibis, they proved a hit among children and customizers alike. I resisted them for a while, but finally seeing a customized one in person broke down the walls and I had to customize some of my own. Yum Yum was the first started, though the second completed. She's inspired by G1 Twice-as-Fancy Yum Yum, one of my favorite ponies despite her pinkness.

Yum Yum was made from a Bay Breeze. Her base hair color was perfect, but unfortunately, she had other stripes of color painted on. I tried, but failed at being able to get all of the thick paint removed from all the cracks and crevices. Thus, I repainted her hair in the appropriate pink. I painted her eyes lavender to match the original Yum Yum's. Then came the fun part-painting tiny pieces of candy all over her body. Finally, I gave her feathered wings made out of pink Fantasy Film for a look reminiscent of the original pegasus while giving the chibi version a uniqueness all her own.

Kar is really great. I still owe her some knit pony stockings for a custom she was making.

Moonhopper is just beautiful. I still have my battered Moonstone and Star Hopper tucked away somewhere, and she's a perfect mix of the two. I may have to hit you up for a custom of my own someday. *grins*

All of these are great! But I LOVe the Blue Bee best! It's so cute and I actually saw a blue bee once. Well, maybe it was actually white I don't know. I guess it sounds weird. But it really looked blue. It was dead though. I wonder what kind it was. I guess it was probably a solitary bee of some kind.
